I started Innovative Speech & Communication Services in 2004. Although therapy is provided year round, our niche is providing summer
"bridge" services for people who need continued services over the summer break. With a shortage of speech-language pathologists, and
long waiting lists at the local clinic and hospital, finding services can be quite a challenge.

This is a subject near and dear to my heart, because you see, my now 18 year old son, James, had a
severe speech and language delay as
a toddler.

At that time, there were no early intervention programs available, and finding speech therapy services over the summer was a
monumental task. The opinion of the pediatrician was that the communication delay must be due to severe cognitive impairments, and
possibly autism. The doctor's opinion was that James would never be able to attend school in a general education environment.

To say this was distressing would not begin to express the emotions I had at the time. I knew  nothing about communication
development and began to research ways I could help my son.

I was fortunate to find excellent services at Michigan State University, and it was working with their excellent staff which inspired me to
earn certification as a speech-language pathologist. I also have teacher certification through the State of Michigan.

James received speech and language therapy through junior high. His accomplishments include playing football, lacrosse (see his picture
below), playing bass guitar, and making the honor roll (when he chose to put his mind to it!) He is now beginning his college career at
our local community college, and is making plans for his future.

If you have any questions, or concerns, about your child's communication skills, please don't hesitate to contact me. At this time, IS&CS
provides services to our clients in their homes and my "office" is a small space I claimed in our family room. So, if you call my business line
in the evening, you may hear one of my five children answering the phone!

of vowel sounds and  very few consonants.
